Here's a page from the book:
There are three ways to encourage your child to read using this book (or any other book!). First, encourage your child to tell the story by "reading" the pictures. Use the last page of the book for your child to draw his/her own picture of the farms animals, and then tell a story about the picture. Secondly, have your child read or attempt to read the words. (This is the hardest one for me to do because I want to jump in to help too soon!) Lastly, read the story to your child, and then have him/her retell the story to you.
It's amazing to see the confidence your child gains when using this method to teach reading! It's also wonderful for your child to know that it's okay to make mistakes because that's how we learn. After we started using this method with Dandie, she's much more eager to tell the story in her own words. She's been sounding out words on her own to write in her notebook. They may be spelled incorrectly, but that doesn't matter at this stage of the game.
